Arista Records is the record label under which Whitney Houston released the majority of her albums. Arista is a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment, and its main offices are located in New York City. The label, founded in 1974 by Clive Davis, has represented several prominent artists, including Barry Manilow, Aretha Franklin, and Dionne Warwick.

Whitney Houston signed with Arista Records in 1983, and the label released her self-titled debut album, Whitney Houston, in 1985.[1] This marked the beginning of one of the most successful careers in music history. Under Arista, Houston released albums such as Whitney (1987), I’m Your Baby Tonight (1990), The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album (1992), My Love Is Your Love (1998), Just Whitney (2002), and I Look to You (2009).

History[]

Arista Records was founded by music executive Clive Davis in 1974 after his departure from CBS Records. The label was named after Davis’ public secondary school honor society in New York City. Arista Records was intended to be a home for a wide array of musical talent, blending various genres from pop and R&B to rock.[2]

In 2000, Arista Records became a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment when BMG and Sony merged. During the early 2000s, with the transition of Clive Davis's leadership, the label underwent significant structural changes.

In 2018, Arista Records was reestablished under the leadership of David Massey as part of Sony Music’s strategy to revive the label.[3]
